Frog Pond Private Lessons FAQs
Private lessons are intended for skaters of all ages and levels, and can be a great way to introduce skating or to hone a specific skill. For tourists interested in a jump start for their skating skills, private lessons are the way to go! Our professional staff can help you enjoy your time at the Frog Pond while teaching skills that can be practiced in the future. The Frog Pond also offers group lessons – a fantastic and fun way for local skaters to learn to skate!
Profiles of all of the Frog Pond coaches can be found on our website. You are welcome to request a specific coach or speak with a scheduling specialist to match you with the right coach.
At the Frog Pond, we hope that scheduling your lesson is an easy process! We offer both walk-up and pre-booked lessons seven days a week throughout the skating season on all days that the Frog Pond is open. If you would like to book your lesson in advance, please register online above. If you would like to skate at a specific day and time, it is recommended that you book your lesson in advance. One time lessons may be scheduled up to a week in advance. If you are interested in doing a walk up lesson, you are welcome set one up on the spot provided that a coach is available! Ask at the admission booth on your way in if you are interested in taking a lesson!
No! The Frog Pond has skates in sizes 8-15 available to rent. Rental skates are often a great alternative to older or non-supportive skates that haven’t been sharpened in a while, and they can be a great way to begin to skate! That said, skaters are welcome to use their own skates if they have them. Double runner skates are not permitted, and we recommend that all young beginning skaters initially learn to skate using skates with a recreational figure skating blade.
Because your lesson will be outdoors, we recommend that you dress in weather appropriate layers that do not restrict movement. On colder days, snow pants/suits are strongly recommended for young beginning skaters. On warmer days, we recommend bringing along a change of clothes to wear after a lesson. A single pair of thin socks are ideal because they will allow skaters to feel their feet connecting to their skates. Finally, don’t forget that warm gloves or mittens are a necessity for learning to skate outside!
The fee for private lessons varies depending on the length of the lesson and the number of skaters involved, and fees range from $35-$105. Additionally, skaters 14 and older must pay a $5 admission fee when taking a lesson during a Public Session, and all skaters must pay a $12 admission fee when skating during an early morning free skate session. Skaters planning to skate throughout the season are welcome to purchase passes for deep discounts to these prices!
The Frog Pond maintains a 24 hour private lesson cancellation policy. All cancellations need to be made at least 24 hours in advance. If you are taking a one time lesson, you must contact The Skating Academy’s Frog Pond campus by phoning 617.635.2120 ext. 11, or by emailing FrogPond.PL@skatingacademy.org. If you are enrolled in a series of lessons and need to miss or re-schedule one of these lessons, please coordinate changes directly with your coach.
Lessons are scheduled for a specific time block, and the majority of our coaches have schedules with consecutive back to back lessons. Additionally, as we have a 24 hour cancellation policy, we are unable to cancel and re-schedule lessons if you are running late. If you can make it for part of your lesson, please come anyway! If you are running late for your lesson and you have recurring lessons with the same coach, please contact your coach directly as soon as possible!
While skating outdoors can be a beautiful way to experience the sport, the weather does occasionally necessitate closing the rink and canceling lessons. If the weather is questionable on the day of a lesson, please check the BostonFrogPond.com homepage for the latest weather update one hour prior to the start of your lesson. If lessons have not been cancelled on the homepage but you are concerned about skating in questionable weather, please contact your coach directly.
All weather related cancellations will be made up the week of March 10-16, 2013. Please contact The Skating Academy’s Frog Pond campus by phoning 617.635.2120 ext. 11, or by emailing FrogPond.PL@skatingacademy.org. If you are enrolled in a series of lessons and need to miss or re-schedule one of these lessons, please coordinate changes directly with your coach.
A free skate session is a session that is open only to figure skaters interested in practicing skills that utilize portions of the ice beyond just the center of the ice that is traditionally blocked off during a public session. At the Frog Pond, free skate session are offered Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 7:00AM-10:00AM and Thursdays from 7:30-10:00AM. You should skate during a free skate session instead of a public session if you would like to work on jumps and spins, Moves in the Field, ice dance patterns, or practice a program with music.
