Adaptive Skating
For Children and Adults with Disabilities
At The Skating Club of Boston®, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to skate, and we are dedicated to creating a positive, encouraging environment where all can learn, grow, and enjoy the ice. Adaptive Skating offers children and adults with disabilities the chance to experience the joy of figure skating through a specialized, supportive program. Our program director, instructors, volunteer coordinator, and volunteers work closely with each skater and their family to tailor lessons to individual needs.
Registered skaters typically begin with 40-minute one-on-one lessons. As they progress, each skater is reassessed to determine readiness for small group lessons- one instructor with up to three students. Many participants experience remarkable growth, seeing transformations week to week and session to session!
What are the benefits?
Ice skating helps improve balance, coordination, circulation, and strength. In Adaptive Skating, instructors provide a supportive, individualized environment where skaters can progress at their own pace, explore the sport, and gain confidence while discovering a new lifelong activity.
Families often enjoy watching their skater grow and develop on the ice, while also connecting with others in the program. These shared experiences create a welcoming community where families can support one another and celebrate each skater’s achievements.
What are the benefits?
The program director, Michael Phaneuf, personally connects with each new skater’s family to determine the best placement. Once a skater is ready to join, Michael will guide the family through the registration process.
Space is limited, and enrollment is offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Volunteer with Adaptive Skating!
The Skating Academy needs volunteers aged 14 and up to help make each session possible. Certain requirements apply for volunteer instructors. Without enough volunteers, we can’t support all skaters who want to participate.
